How to Tell Which Skin Type You Have—and Build Your Ultimate Routine

Understanding your skin type is crucial for building an effective and personalized skincare routine. Each skin type has unique characteristics and requires tailored care to address specific concerns and maintain a healthy complexion. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of identifying your skin type and help you create the ultimate skincare routine to achieve radiant and glowing skin.

Learn Your Skin Type

Cleanse your face thoroughly and let it dry. After 20 minutes, carefully observe your skin in a well-lit area and in front of a mirror. Take note of the following characteristics to identify your skin type:

Normal Skin:

  • Balanced complexion with no excessive oiliness or dryness.

  • Smooth texture with small and barely visible pores.

  • Few blemishes or imperfections.

Dry Skin:

  • Skin feels tight, especially after cleansing.

  • Rough or flaky texture, often accompanied by dullness.

  • Small pores and a higher likelihood of fine lines and wrinkles.

Oily Skin:

  • Noticeable shine, particularly in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

  • Skin feels greasy to the touch.

  • Enlarged pores and a tendency to experience acne breakouts.

Combination Skin:

  • Oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) with normal or dry cheeks.

  • Different areas of the face have distinct characteristics.

Sensitive Skin:

  • Easily irritated and prone to redness or rash.

  • Reacts to skincare products, environmental factors, or certain ingredients.

The Ultimate Skincare Routine

Now that you have learned more about what skin type you have, it’s time to develop a routine to keep it healthy. Remember to consult with a professional to find products that are tailored to your skin type. Always apply skincare products thinnest to thickest and in an upward motion!

  1. Cleansing: Start with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type. Cleanse your face twice a day to remove impurities and excess oil without stripping the skin's natural moisture barrier. It is important to double cleanse at night. The 1st cleanse loosens makeup and impurities that have sat on your skin throughout the day and the 2nd cleanse actually removes all the makeup and impurities. Think of double cleansing like sweeping and mopping. The 1st cleanse is like sweeping the floor and gathering all the dirt in 1 spot. The 2nd cleanse is like mopping everything up and really cleaning.

  2. Exfoliation (no more than twice weekly): Incorporate exfoliation once or twice a week. Use a chemical exfoliant with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to slough off dead skin cells and promote cell turnover.

  3. Toning (Optional): Use a toner after cleansing to balance the skin's pH levels and prepare it for better absorption of subsequent products. Look for alcohol-free formulas, especially when it comes to sensitive skin.

  4. Actives and Serums: Products that are tailored to your skin's needs and what will really change the overall appearance and function of your skin.

  5. Moisturizing: Choose a moisturizer tailored to your skin type. Dry skin benefits from richer, emollient-based formulas, while oily skin requires lightweight, oil-free moisturizers.

  6. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and broad-spectrum (UVA & UVB) protection every morning.

  7. Nighttime Routine: At bedtime, repeat the cleansing and moisturizing steps. You can also apply a night cream or a heavier moisturizer to replenish your skin while you sleep.

  8. Hydration and Lifestyle: Adequate sleep and hydration is key to keeping your skin healthy.

  9. Patch Testing: Perform a patch test to check for any adverse reactions before incorporating new products into your routine.

Remember to stick to your routine and adjust it as necessary to achieve optimum results.
