What is compounded semaglutide?

Compounding is the process of creating a medication that’s tailored to the needs of an individual patient. For example, some patients may need a medication in liquid form when the FDA-approved drug comes in a pill. Additionally, a pharmacy can compound medications of FDA-approved drugs that are in shortage.

Compounded drugs are prepared by state-licensed compounding pharmacies that meet FDA and state requirements, including quality standards. When compounding in compliance with federal law, compounded drugs are not subject to FDA approval and do not have to undergo safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing review.

How effective is compounded semaglutide compared to FDA-approved versions?

There is limited clinical research specifically comparing the efficacy of compounded semaglutide to FDA-approved versions. However, the compounded version replicates the formulation and dosage of FDA-approved semaglutide and it offers the same benefits in terms of blood sugar control and weight loss.

Where is compounded semaglutide made?

Avere works with state-licensed compounding pharmacies to produce compounded semaglutide. Compounding is regulated by both FDA and state boards of pharmacy. A licensed compounding pharmacy must comply with both federal and state laws, which include administrative requirements and quality standards.

How is compounded semaglutide administered?

Like FDA-approved semaglutide, compounded semaglutide is administered as a subcutaneous injection. The frequency and dosage depend on your prescription.

GLP-1 receptor agonists—including semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, and tirzepatide—have been prescribed (on-and-off label) for weight management, including obesity, along with a reduced caloric diet and increased physical activity. Take precaution with, and read all warnings concerning, GLP-1s, as they may cause serious side effects, including a risk of thyroid c-cell tumors. Do not use if you or your family have a history of a type of thyroid cancer called MTC (medullary thyroid carcinoma) or MEN 2 (multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome). See important warnings & safety info about these medications.
