Under Eye Filler - Filler Under The Eye?

Updated: Sep 16, 2023

A common request us providers at Avere Beauty receive day to day is to “fix the under eye bags I have from lack of sleep and exhaustion”. Luckily, we do have some fixes that might be the right treatment for you.

However, it is important to understand the reasons as to why you might be developing under eye bags or hollowness as it is not always just a lack of sleep. A few causes include, the body’s aging process, high-salt diets, allergies, lack of sleep, or even genetics. Some of these causes can be avoidable, but some are inevitable. You might be surprised by a few of the reasons.

For example, a salty diet… who would have thought that would contribute to puffy eyes? By consuming lots of salty foods, our bodies will hold onto some of that water, which can localize to our under eyes thus creating some swelling. The other common causes may seem more logical.

For example, “if my mom has them, I’ll probably have them, right?”- is a statement I hear pretty frequently. And the answer is - possibly! Genetics do play a role in how our bodies develop or age over time. So what can we do about them then? Well, here are some of our solutions.

An at home option that will aid in reducing puffiness related to seasonal allergies is to use a cold compress to the area. You could use a cold washcloth, ice packs, or even cold cucumbers to rest on your eyes. By cooling the area, it will reduce inflammation and blood flow to the area which will lessen the puffiness. It must be understood that this is a simple trick and will not be a long-term fix. Sometimes those buggers need some extra help and therefore we recommend seeing you at the office.

Our esthetician is able to provide clients with expert skincare product recommendations as well as services including chemical peels and microneedling which are other solutions. A chemical peel is similar to a facial, however it uses a chemical solution to alter the skin’s pH. This will ultimately shed the superficial layer of the skin over the next week leaving brighter, tighter, and healthier skin. “A peel a year keeps my face looking clear…” - Me.

Another service that would be beneficial depending on severity of under eye puffiness would be microneedling. This service includes the use of the SkinPen. The pen causes micro injuries to the skin which stimulates collagen production.

The whole treatment will take around 45 minutes and it is recommended to have three treatments, one every 4 weeks, to optimize results. The following 3 to 6 months is when you will notice the most results as this will be the peak of the collagen production.

Currently, one of our favorite services to help with the under eye area is the use of PDO threads. PDO stands for polydioxanone, which is a dissolvable material made up of protein and is as thin as a piece of sewing thread.

Each thread is attached to a small needle or cannula that easily glides underneath the skin where the thread is disengaged and remains until it fully dissolves over the following 4 to 6 weeks. The threads used are called “twist” threads with their purpose being to flood the area with collagen while giving the skin extra support.

Both of these functions will assist in popping back out the sunken skin with results lasting upward of 18 months. The process is very simple and takes no longer than around 20 minutes.

Finally, if none of the above options appeal to you then injectables will be your non-surgical solution. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can last for around 10 to12 months. It is important you are seen by an experienced provider because under eye filler can be tricky since using too much filler can worsen the puffiness.

A perfect balance of filler to each side of the eye is crucial and always remember that less is more. Hyaluronic acid attracts water so if the area is flooded with filler you will see residual and even worsened bags. When done properly, clients are extremely pleased with the immediate results.

In conclusion, the under eyes can be a tricky area to find the correct solution for, however that is what we as providers here at Avere Beauty are for. When you book a free consultation, we sit down with you and discuss what your concerns are and what we feel is the most appropriate service for you.
